Leeds Canal: Critical Canal Repair Completed Ahead of Schedule

Land & Water required critical repair work on a section of the Leeds Canal. The project presented significant logistical challenges, primarily revolving around accessing the submerged repair site and ensuring the stability of heavy lifting equipment. This required a novel approach to equipment mobilisation and an absolute commitment to diver safety protocols.

The primary obstacles centred on the first-time nature of the specific repair and deploying a large crane over water. Standard access methods were unworkable, requiring a solution to address complete buoyancy issues to support the crane's weight and operational stresses. We ensured the safe installation of the stop locks to enable the works to be completed, whilst also providing the crucial establishment of robust, fully compliant procedures and provision for the rescue of divers working underwater during the repair phase.

The solution utilised expert project management to design and execute a successful strategy. This involved the mobilisation of the crane onto pontoons, which were engineered to provide sufficient buoyancy and stability to perform all required lifts safely. Simultaneously, protocols and specialist equipment were implemented to guarantee the safety of the dive team, exceeding industry standards for underwater work. This dual focus on technical stability and operational safety led to the project's successful and early completion.

Successful planning and project management ensured the highly competent team were able to safely and efficiently complete the required repairs. The project was delivered ahead of the original schedule, and the new methodologies established a comprehensive safety framework for the specialist dive team.
